Final Evaluations

Hey, this will be my last post. The semester is almost over and we've all come a long way since the beginning. After tonight, there will be no more papers to do! Overall, UW has been a solid experience for me. I wasn't particularly excited for the topic of Women's Autobiography at first, but I didn't really mind it that much. Although it was a bit boring at times, I actually learned some interesting stuff. However, the class was really hard. I always did well on my papers in high school, but I didn't do as well here. The grading system and the styles that we wrote in were somewhat different, and after writing so many papers in high school, it was a bit difficult to make the adjustment. It was also a lot different having only half the year to write multiple papers as opposed to a full schoolyear. I think that even though I didn't do as well as I'd like to do in UW, it was still a good experience and I learned new things that will be helpful for papers and writing in the future!

Research Paper Topic

Hey, sorry this is so late. Crazy weekend. So much to do, so little time. Anyway, for my research topic I would like to do Women in Sports. As you could tell by my last few posts, I'm very interested in sports. I was thinking about doing my paper on how women are viewed and treated by the media, audience, and other athletes in the sports world. I thought maybe I could use either Martina Navratilova and/or Billie Jean King as my primary object(s) of study. For those of you who don't know, they are two of the best female tennis players ever, and they have both written autobiographies. Let me know what you think.

Reaction to When Heaven and Earth Changed Places

In UW, we had to read a selection from The Norton Book of Women's Lives from the autobiography When Heaven and Earth Changed Places by Le Ly Hayslip. It is Hayslip's account from when she was a young girl and part of the Viet Cong in Vietnam. I enjoyed reading her story (or chunk of her story) because of a few reasons. First, I like to read about war stories. Although Hayslip was not carrying a gun or was not in actual combat, I like reading about the people at their homes and what happened behind the lines of fire. I also liked reading When Heaven and Earth Changed Places because of Hayslip's courage. She has one incident where there are many Republicans heading toward her. She exclaims, "Despite my terror, I forced myself to walk nonchalantly toward the road, right into the soldiers' teeth." This is to warn fellow Viet Cong that enemies are approaching. She has a lot of guts to be able to walk right into where the Republicans are. Another interesting part of the story is when Hayslip is imprisoned and is tortured in a number of vile ways. I think the worst ways in which she was tortured was when the enemies put honey all over her, loaded her legs with ants, and then threw a snake down her shirt. Hayslip has a lot of courage, I think, to be able to tell this story.

I also enjoyed hearing CJS's father's accounts and stories from when he was in Vietnam. He made it easier to understand what was going on in the war and where Hayslip was geographically. I liked looking at the pictures from when he was in the armed forces. It was great to have a guest speaker that loves to teach and talk about his memories. Thanks again :-)

Well, I will see everyone later.

Lady at the Bat

Hey. For my blog to focus on for the semester, I've chosen one called "Lady at the Bat." It is a blog updated almost every day with news regarding Major League Baseball. I chose this blog becuase I am interested in sports. So why not choose something that I can enjoy reading? The posts on the blog are very interesting. If I don't catch something on SportsCenter or ESPNEWS, I still might have a chance to find out in the blog. It was also good because the Phillies made the playoffs this year. Although they have already been eliminated, I was more excited about October baseball this year than ever before. It made reading the posts even better. Well, that's it for Entry #2. Hopefully the Phillies make the playoffs again next year.

Welcome UDub at GDub

Whats up guys... I'm T-Bun. It's a nickname, don't ask how I got it because I hate telling the story. Just go with it. You can call me whatever you want: T-Bun, Bun, Bunny, anything that rhymes with bun pretty much. I'm a freshman from Philly and I'm a fan of all Philadelphia sports, especially the Eagles. Because I'm such a huge Eagles fan, I'm going to give you the official Eagles fight song:

Fly Eagles fly
On the road to victory
Fight Eagles fight
Score a touchdown 1, 2, 3.

Hit 'em low
Hit 'em high
And watch our Eagles fly

Fly Eagles fly
On the road to victory

E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES!!!

I know that was stupid and you don't care, but whatever. I liked it. Anyway, you're probably wondering what else I like besides the Eagles. Well I love volleyball. I play for GDub's club team and I'm convinced that volleyball is the greatest game ever invented. The second greatest game ever invented is Guitar Hero. Yes, I'm absolutely filthy at it. Yes, I can beat Free Bird on expert. If you ever want to play just stop by my room because we play all the time. My favorite food is, yes you guessed it... Philadelphia Cheesesteaks. If you've never had a legit cheesesteak from Philadelphia (not the gross ones from Burger King or Pita Pit), then you haven't lived. Every time I take a bite it's like a party in my mouth. Well I guess that's it for today. I'm home for the weekend so I won't see any of you around campus. Hope everyone has a good weekend. See ya Monday.
